New directive on limit values for formaldehyde used in certain toys

A new directive on specific limit values for chemicals used in certain toys (Directive (EU) 2019/1929) has been published at the Official Journal.

This new directive adds formaldehyde to the Appendix C to Annex II to Directive 2009/48/EC as it is classified as carcinogenic category 1B under CLP. In fact, formaldehyde is used as a monomer in the manufacture of polymeric materials, such as toys. Children may therefore ingest formaldehyde when placing these toys in their mouths.

Member states should apply the provisions to comply with the directive from 21 May 2021.
